For my product, I taught young girls about having a positive self-image. With all the
media has projected on our society of an unreachable idea of beauty, young
girls are pressured to look or act a certain way, which more often than not
isn’t who they really are. Therefore, it is important that they are taught how
to maintain a positive self-image in order to be successful and more
importantly, healthy. Girls seem to be most impacted by the media while they are in grade school. As I advertised my event, I opened it to girls from the 3rd grade all they way to seniors in high school. I would have loved to open it to girls that are younger than third grade, but there are some things that they wouldn't be able to understand quite yet. It is my hope that after coming to my event, the girls that came will have a better sense of self, and a solid foundation that will enable them to rise above the false images that plague our society. I told each of the girls that came that they are a princess, and did what I could to make them realize that. Most every little girl dreams of being a beautiful princess with a tiara, and grows up watching Disney princess movies. It's fun to dress up, and have "princess parties" where you act royal. However, after a while, the world stops telling you that you can make-believe and dress up, and begins to tell you you aren't worth it unless you change yourself. Growing up, it always bothered me that other girls were okay with this, and changed themselves to try and meet up to an unreachable standard. After a certain point, no one really believes they're a princess anymore. After completing my junior research paper, I concluded that a positive outlook on life is healthier than having a negative one. This made it clear that girls caving in to having a negative self-concept is highly unhealthy for them. I couldn't bear to see any girl hurting, and decided it was time to try and make a difference. So, I decided to teach girls that they are really, truly, princesses.
